The Main Causes of Depression

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with clinical depression, you'll most likely be wondering what are the causes for depression.

Depression is very complex. People suffer from it for various reasons. Some experience depression when they are in a critical medical condition. Others experience depression during life changes and this includes the loss of a loved one or moving to a new place. There are also those who seem to have inherited depression from their parents or other relatives. Those with depression often feel an overwhelming sense of loneliness and sadness for no apparent reason.
Many factors can increase the chances of being depressed, and here are some of them:

  • Abuse. Those who were abused, either physically, sexually, or emotionally, will most likely experience depression in the future.
  • Certain medications. Some drugs, especially those used for treating high blood pressure, are known for increasing the occurrence of depression.
  • Conflict.  Some people who have personal disputes or conflict with friends or family members are most likely to experience depression.
  • Death of a loved one. Grief or sadness due to the death of a loved one can also lead to depression.
  • Genetics. Studies show that those with family members who suffer from depression are likely candidates of this illness. It's widely believed that depression can be inherited. How it happens exactly is not yet known.
  • Major events.  Events such as moving, getting divorced, losing a job, or retiring can cause depression. Even events that seem so good such as graduating, starting a new job or getting married can also increase the risk of depression.
  • Serious illnesses. Depression may occur simultaneously with a serious illness or can be a result of that illness.
  • Substance abuse. According to study, almost 30% of people suffering from substance abuse also have clinical depression.
